Valentine’s Day donut box includes 1 of each (6 total):
*
Bakewell tart donut: Originating in Bakewell, Derbyshire, UK, in the early 1800s, the Bakewell tart is traditionally made with almond frangipane and raspberry jam. The donut version will have a chamomile glaze, raspberry jam & marcona almonds.
*
Turkish delight donut: Turkish delight is a candy made from sugar & corn starch and classically flavored with rose water & pistachios, it is sometimes flavored with citrus or spices. The donut version will have an orange blossom glaze & topped with toasted coconut.
*
Citrus tart: Victorians loved to spread lemon curd on toast for breakfast. Lemon curd tarts and treacle were also very beloved treats. The donut version will be filled with a calamansi creamsicle custard. Calamansi is a Philippine citrus. 🍋🟩
*
Mahogany cake donut: Before red velvet cake, there was mahogany cake. The ingredients for velvet cakes include buttermilk or vinegar, baking soda & cocoa powder. In the early days of cocoa manufacturing, cocoa products weren’t alkalized, meaning they were quite acidic. When the natural cocoa was added to the soda or vinegar, the combination created a chemical reaction causing the red pigments in cocoa powder to be released. This resulted in cake with a reddish-brown hue and a whisper of chocolate flavor. The donut version will be “colored” and flavored with dark cherry & black sesame with a touch of chocolate flavor.
*
Tea time donut: Tea was a very popular beverage for Victorians & was enjoyed by everyone. Afternoon tea was a regular social event. The donut version will be tossed in an earl grey and black currant sugar.
*
Chocolate truffle donut: Chocolate was a luxury item in the Victorian era. It was used in many different ways, including as a food, medicine, and flavoring. The Victorian era was a time of experimentation and innovation for chocolate, with new confections and treats being introduced. And while truffles were invented by accident in France, I like to imagine the Victorians enjoying chocolate with their tea. This donut version will have a Darjeeling crème fraîche & rose ganache and fancy chocolate sprinkles.
